Gertrudis Chale

  • Born Vienna, Austria - 1898
  • Attends the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (now called, the University of Applied Arts) - c.1920
  • Studies painting at the school of Heimann; Munich, Germany. - Early 20's
  • Furthers artistic training in Geneva, Switzerland; begins working in decorative art and design; exhibits her work for the first time. - Early 20's -
  • Leaves Geneva for Paris. - c. mid 20's
  • Lives in Paris, doing commercial advertising work for several major advertising firms. - c. late 20's / early 30's
  • Moves from France to Spain to take a position as an artistic collaborator in an important fashion house. Resides one year on the islands of Mallorca and Ibiza. Travels throughout Spain inspired with a newly found devotion to painting. Lives in Madrid, for more than a year. - Early 30's
  • Decides to flee Spain for Argentina, due to the growing political crisis in Spain and the rise of Fascism in Europe. - 1934
  • Arrives in Buenos Aires and lives in the suburb of Quilmes.
  • Begins to establish her place as an artist and intellectual amongst the cultured, social community in Buenos Aires. - 1934
  • Travels throughout Argentina, from the high plains (altiplano) of the Andes in the north, to Patagonia in the south. Paints the dramatic landscapes and the native people she encounters. - 1934 to 1954
  • Returns to Spain and visits France, Italy, Germany and Australia. - 1936 and 1938
  • Embarks on an eighteen month trip through Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. - 1945
  • Journeys to and exhibits in Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay - *
  • Awarded First Prize in Painting from the Society of Watercolorists and Engravers; Buenos Aires, Argentina. - 1948
  • Lives and works with a group of artists in Salta, Argentina. - Early 50's
  • Receives a First Prize in Drawing from the Society of Watercolorists and Engravers; Buenos Aires, Argentina. - 1951
  • Paints one of the murals at the Galeria Santa Fe; Buenos Aires,Argentina. - Summer 1954
  • Dies in a plane crash in the Sierra de Vilgo, a province of La Rioja, returning from Mendoza to Buenos Aires. - 1954
